Assignment: Cover – Are We Living With Alien Cells?

Challenge: Bring life to an unseen idea…alien cells. The illustration had to be believable, have recognizable undertones, magic, a sense of humor, and get people to notice it.

Results: The newsstand edition was tremendously successful. On the internet, it went viral. In Scientific American’s first on-line gallery, after only 24 hours, the image was not only seen by millions, it was linked to by “alien enthusiast” websites all over the world in multiple languages with articles that can still be easily found today.
